Bill, this has come up before, I think it's one of those "standard Microsoft business practice" things. It's a logical outgrowth of the old "dll hell" runtime model, where vendors are required to ship all the standard runtime libraries that have been updated at the time the app ships. Now, what's up to date is Windows+IE4, so it makes sense, after a fashion. Everything added since the retail release (did you know it it's the best seller? What's with those OEMs?) is officially part of IE. Just watch out if you load IE3 on top of IE4. . .

At this point, I'd guess it's probably to the point where you get a more stable system if you don't resist, sad to say. I feel another IE hangover coming on. To paraphrase Stallman, Free IE is like free beer, and too much of either can make you want to . . . never mind.

Cheers, Dan.
