I believe the wind was from the south and the vessel was heading mostly north, so it doesn't seem like a factor to me.

Seems to me that ships would normally be travelling slowly as they make their way through the narrow canal in daisy chain fashion. For the ship to be so badly beached imho tells me the captain panicked for some reason and put the pedal to the metal.
