DEC has many customers who would buy their PCs if they were better/cheaper/more reliable. By taking lessons from Compaq on manufacturing efficiency, and taking advantage of better price breaks on parts, I think DEC could sell a lot more PCs than they do now.

By moving to a direct approach, they could satisfy a whole portion of the market that prefers to buy that way.

The two brand names are just a way to make the PCs seem different in the marketplace so that the Channel which currently sells Compaq doesn't have a fir when a serious effort to move PCs over the internet and by phone gets underway.
