read the part of my paper on ELM... that's where the huge logistics savings are... dell and cpq both have it..cpq implemented the first major ELM in 1989. It cost me 1 million to buy it and the payback on the captial was about 1 qtr ...3 months and it paid back the 1 million. now days you can buy ELMs for 25 to 100k and they are web-based. you can even run your customers mrp/crp in 20 seconds. a process that when invented in 1961 took 48 hrs and that was Orlicky's net change version.
