Selection to the DEMO 98 shortlist (or any of these technology fests) is a marketing and PR coup. That's about it. Serious investors would do well to not be drawn into these marketing and PR orgies.

Does anyone seriously believe that a bunch of technology 'experts' can realistically evaluate, rate and rank products? If so, please help me understand some of the evaluation criteria--a simple one like 'ease of use' will suffice.

In the end, all these technology awards mean squat if real-life evaluators (i.e. customers) don't adopt the products. I don't have the time or resources to analyze this in detail, but I very much doubt that these 'best' products perform significantly better than products that do not make the 'best' list. Very few products to my knowledge have succeeded over the longer term on the basis of a perceived technology lead. Things like solid management, good salesforce, tight customer management etc. count for a lot more.
