I'm no pharmacologist but I would just say there is a dramatic difference between fentanyl and e.g., buprenorphine (suboxone) which has a dramatically longer half life (as much as 10x difference). I would expect something with a short half-life to have a brief but substantial spike in potency. Whereas suboxone (used for pain management and as a safer alternative for addicts in trying to prevent death due to overdose).
