My son got "the talk". "When a cop tells you to pat your head and rub your belly at the same time, son, you do it and don't ask questions." That is "the talk" that should be given. If "black" sons are being given a different "talk", perhaps that's the problem where you live.

It is not healthy to instill a fear of police, or a preconception of some kind of personal animus from the law in your child. There is only one answer that is acceptable: If a police officer speaks, you listen and act accordingly.

BTW, I knew that when I got my first speeding ticket at 13. My dad, having been orphaned in Dallas to fend for himself at 12, while the biggest pop culture figures were Bonnie & Clyde, understood something about what could go wrong. He made sure I knew that long before I took off on my Honda 50.
