People on this thread are just so blind that they did not even see what CPQ is really up to behind the screen with this CPQ/DEC deal !!! If CPQ just want a service organization,it can buy Wang/Unysis with less. Then why did CPQ would rather pay 9B to buy DEC? What is really in DEC pocket that CPQ wants ? The Alpha Processor. The Alpha processor is a real thing and is now available in the market with 600Mhrz, while the Mecede , you got to wait till 1999, which is already one year behind. Technically speaking, it really did not matter whether you use a Mecede or Alpha to power the system as long as the operating system is the same, the user will never feel the difference at all. At the beginning, it came the AMD, Cyrx , and lately IDTI to squeeze INTC from the bottom, and CPQ used both AMD and Cyrx processors, and probably IDTI's C6 soon. Then it comes the DEC suit against INTC, and ended with INTC will guarantee the supply of PII to DEC with a discount price, then recently came the DEC/MSFT agreement to develop the NT OS system for ALPHA, and today, it comes the announcement that ALPHA will hit the 1G record by year 2000. With all those activities on ALPHA, I do not think CPQ will phase out ALPHA. INTC will face additional pressure from the top, that is competition from ALPHA in the high end workstations, servers ...etc. With its own CPU, the cost of CPQ will be further reduced. This will not only benefit CPQ, but all those box makers in the Far East, but also MSFT. MSFT will have more choices and do not have to depend on INTC alone. So, what CPQ is really up to? high end server and workstation market with its own CPUs and MSFT behind !!!!
