Samsung, LG reportedly exit I300I

AUSTIN, Tex. -- Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and LG Semicon Co. Ltd.
have pulled out of the Sematech-backed International 300-mm Initiative
(I300I) due to their current financial crisis, according to reliable
sources today.

Meanhile, it is believed that Korea's Hyundai Electronics Industries Co.
Ltd. at this time is still a member of I300I, which is evaluating and
testing 300-mm wafer processing equipment.

In Austin, a Sematech spokesman declined to comment on the report. The
Korean chip companies could not be reached immediately for comment.

It wasn't clear how much impact the departure of the two Korean members
would have on the on-going I300I effort. The loss of fees from the two
firms will likely be made up in other financing arrangements to keep the
300-mm tool testing and qualification program on track. However, I300I
officials have warned that tools are not ready for tests and evaluations
are not likely to be completed as expected by the end of June.

It wasn't known if Samsung has also dropped out of the rival Japanese
300-mm group, Selete (Semiconductor Leading Edge Technology Inc.). Last
year the Korean device firm was the only non-Japanese company to join
Selete.

Sources said they were not sure how the exit from I300I would affect the
300-mm fab plans for these companies. Once 300-mm tools are tested and
qualified by both I300I and Selete, presumably they will be available to
the Koreans when other chip makers have the opportunity to purchase
equipment. However, many industry managers and analysts believe the
chaebols are faced with delaying their plans because of the financial
crisis facing Korean companies.

Jacob,

Early last year, I predicted 250% for 1997 and 100% for 1998. The stock did gained 200% last Aug but finished for the year less than 100%. Whether daily or not, I'm better predicting the HIs and the LOs than the Close, and also tend to OverShoot... The problem now is that in your survey, there's no slot for the HI's in 1999 (which I think would be over 100 in Aug, 1999)---so just don't include mine in your tabulation... Anyway, here's mine:---LO is 27, HI and Close is 60 for 1998; HI is 100 and Close is 60 for 1999...
