I'm not taking a leftist or Democratic position. I'm recognizing context. This is national security 101.It was not a police officer's right or responsibility to decide whether this was a protest (it was) versus an insurrection I would not ask him to. This is not some street cop dealing with a street criminal in the neighborhood. It was an assault on the US government. The location and the volume define it. Different paradigm. Different rules apply. The "cops" at the Capitol are more like military police or National Guard. They are defending a US facility and its VIP personnel. US facilities have cops to guard them. Duh. Of course there are cops of some sort there. It would be redundant for them to announce themselves. The sides each know that the other is there. She may not have recognize the paradigm shift, silly girl, thinking she was in some citizen role, and that's sad, but the cops knew what was happening. They knew what their role was even if she didn't. Again, she's not a robber running around in the neighborhood. In the Capitol context she is not an individual perp and the cops are not street cops. She was, however unaware, the leading edge of a ragged assault team. Combatants lose their individuality in a skirmish. She had the misfortune of being the first of an identical lot over the barricade. The National Guard on the mall has authority to use lethal force to protect the Capitol and Congress. I don't see why any cops be they Capitol Police or Secret Service or Metropolitan police, all lined up in defense of the Capitol, would be any different.
