<A> Sprint -2: Sees Partnerships Also Playing Role In Local

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Sprint Corp. (FON) sees no economic advantage to making an acquisition in order to compete in the local market, company officials said in a recorded announcement Tuesday.

The company has been asked many times if it is planning such a purchase, officials said. However, despite disappointment with a "lack of progress" toward local competition, the company says an acquisition isn't the answer.

Sprint, the nation's third largest long-distance company, will continue to work with its existing assets and seek partnerships to help it in the local market.

The company said capital spending was $2.5 billion in 1997 and is expected to be $2.8 billion this year.
