I do have at least one unused Win7Pro license left.

But Microsoft will never get me to pay rent.

Yup, you are correct. The subscription model will likely become the new "normal". It's just another step in the forever increase in consumer debt. Saving up and paying cash for anything is so "yesterday". I can't shake the feeling that only "Mafiosis and drug dealers" use actual cash while everyone else including our governments uses "future / yet to be earned" money.

Just looking at the idiotically expensive credit card / car / whatever debt so many people carry makes my head spin.

Call me old fashioned, call me a dino ... I despise personal debt / endless ongoing personal obligations.

but I expect in the near future, there will be a subscription vs a license for Windows and Apple OS
which will push many private users and nearly all business to Linux.

Apple would have a very tough time charging for its operating systems now since they've been giving them away for free for many years.

I highly doubt Apple will be going to a subscription model. That would only serve to keep people from upgrading, leaving their devices and computers vulnerable to malware and hackers due to lack of security updates.
