The model of the Joint Committee on Taxation, along with its highly competent staff, is a good one. Although over 100 years it has become a monstrosity, too, it is some of the most complex material you can get and still, reasonable systems evolved from it over a period of years. It has cratered now, but we got a lot of functionality out of it. I think we are victims of our own success as a country. As Franklin so presciently put it, "We have a Republic if we can keep it." I think it has run its course. I am disappointed but not surprised. I have mentioned before the great Thomas Sowell's comment some time back that he figured we have maybe a five percent chance of survival; but since that time, we've move from a persistent liberal bent to a "We'll take over if we have to kill you" approach by Democrats. At this point I am going to try to be an observer and complainer. Nothing else to do. I believe younger generations are getting a comeuppance. My hope is the lesson is learned.
