Most of those ~5,000 cyrptos are either dead or so thinly traded it wouldn't make any sense for Coinbase to dedicate capital to supporting them.

Currently there are 53 crypto assets one can purchase on Coinbase, they won't offer most of the alternative coins out there. Crytpo coins will be no different than automobiles. There have been over 3,000 automobile companies in the US alone since Ford came out with the automobile. The strong will survive. Auto source: en.wikipedia.org.
