Japan's Domestic PC Shipments Fall 7% In Oct-Dec Period TOKYO (Nikkei)-Personal computer shipments to the Japanese domestic market totaled 1.59 million in the October-December quarter of 1997, down 7% from a year earlier due to sluggish demand in the year-end shopping season, the Japan Electronic Industry Development Association reported Tuesday. This was the second straight quarter of year-on-year decline, which the industry group attributed to weak demand at volume retailers. In the three-month period, however, demand for notebook models was strong with 25% year-on-year growth in shipments; desktops tumbled 23%. In the same period, the combined value of domestic PC shipments slipped 12% from a year before to 378.6 billion yen. Domestic shipments for 1997 rose 3% from the previous year to 7.04 million thanks in part to the rush in demand before the April consumption tax hike. For fiscal 1997 through March, the industry association has reduced its domestic shipment forecast to 6.7 million, down 7%. satellite.nikkei.co.jp
