In February of 1917, after a broad front of Leftist parties overthrew the monarchy in Russia, the Bolsheviks had only 24,000 members. In St Petersburg, the capital, there were only 2000 members of that party. And yet, only months later, by October, this group managed to overthrow the elected Provisionary government and take control of an empire of almost 180 million people. Often it’s a question of not so much the numbers, but rather the dedication and professionalism of members of a political group. Like, in order to materially impact an outcome of a national election, it may be sufficient to concentrate on a limited number of counties in a few swing states. So, many on the left may not be happy about the forces they have released - but that doesn’t mean they’ll be able to control them. Just as a curiosity, the same Bolsheviks, after having solidified their regime, spent decades systematically eliminating their former fellow Leftists - up to and including large numbers (likely the majority) of Bolsheviks themselves. The priority was no longer personal beliefs - but unquestioning obedience.
