Admittedly, it is even tougher when you lose despite your attempts at cheating. But that still doesn't explain it.

Of course they didn't lose from cheating, but neither did Trump. But if they'd had as little character as Trump, they could've claimed it. In those days, you didn't have a character-less cult leader setting the moral example for millions. I have a brother who's always been a liberal ... I was surprised to hear him call Nixon a statesman once when we were talking about Trump. The lesson is that Trump can make Nixon look good to liberals.
