In 1879 John Muir traveled to what is now Glacier Bay to check out the glaciers Vancouver had described in 1795. In 1750 or so, the glacial ice projected out of the future bay into the ocean some distance. When Vancouver visited, the limit of the ice had retreated five miles. When Muir came to this area, there was an open bay (with icebergs no doubt). The ice sheets had retreated 40 miles. The ice has continued to retreat, but most of the bay was cleared before 1879. Make of this what you will, but how far in back time will we have to go to return to a time of consequence free CO2 levels? The Glacier Bay National Park website shows maps of historical ice extent.
