DEC/VMS is a proprietary operating system (O/S) offered by Digital (now owned by Compaq). VMS is the O/S primarily supporting DEC's Vax hardware platform; VMS has a lot of similarities with that of DOS. Unfortunately, VMS lost popularity in the early 90's...most new shops go with UNIX (which is now being replaced by NT).

VMS has (had?) a strong following and is heavily used in the telecom and health related businesses. On DEC's new Alpha boxes DEC offers both VMS or UNIX...all depends upon what the business has set as their standard. In my view VMS was powerful but I prefer to use UNIX whenever possible - finished a project about 3 months ago where they were using VAX/VMS (everything ran like a charm).
