I think when the police (read Suharto) arrest the chairman of the Chinese Business Council in Indonesia and inform him that they consider him to be a member of a subversive movement known as the PRD then most Chinese businessmen keep their mouths shut from then on. It is the Chinese, not the financial community, that he is signalling to. He has already shown that he does not care what the financial markets think about anything.

I disagree that the military hate Habbibie. I think they are just suspicious of him and anyway, my post stated that his intention was to divide the army and therefore it has to annoy some of the top generals.

The only problem that Indonesia has is that it's bankrupt. The government has been the same for 30 years and even as recently as last July no one in the market cared about politics. It is only in bear markets that it becomes a factor.
