I think every law abiding citizen should be allowed to have a pistol or shotgun for home protection and a hunting rifle, there is no need for anyone other than the military or police to have semi automatic weapons with large magazines. Yep, lots of reasons. They could give amnesty automatically for people who stay clean for ten or so years. Which in a sense they do. One can check their record on a state site and if their name shows up clean they can then get a gun if they are willing to lie on the questions (have you ever ...) on the application form. The lawyers lie, the cops lie, and they want you to lie. Laws are written by lawyers for lawyers. If you want to do it right that's who you pay.
