And we need to do both support the poor with social programs AND a higher minimum wage! When the fucking Republicans started busting unions we saw the middle class decline in an almost perfect 100% correlation. Why do you think we need unions or a minimum wage to begin with!!?? And what are you basing your $11 minimum wage versus $15 minimum wage on!!!??? Your gut I suspect. So why do you think say $11 is better than $15 when in inflation adjusted terms even the $15 does not keep up with historical wages say 50 years ago. If we were prosperous when wages were higher, why would getting back to that wage cause an increase in poverty? History shows us that $15 is reasonable. Employers are not going out to business when there is MORE money for the society to spend. Econ 101, supply will meet the increase in demand. Raising the minimum wage will transfer huge amounts of money from the rich corporations who game the system now by paying stupidly low taxes, or none at all, and low wages to the poor, to higher, more livable wages? If a mom and pop operation needs slave labor to exist, and it is making a lot of money off the slave labor, then fuck them, and if they are barely making it., they can close shop and work for the new $15 wage-lol! The thesis is that we are a rich country and need to distribute those riches more evenly as that is in the best interest for the health of the society. Just like higher taxes is needed for a healthy social safety net which makes for a healthier society! <,"That makes it even more important to raise it to $15 in poor states, as that is the quickest way to raise the poverty level in those states. " The quickest way to raise the poverty level is to put the employers out of work, cuz then they are also impoverished. The quickest way to decrease the poverty rate, which is what you meant to say, is by doing what we has been doing; handing out money to people (Yangbucks), and tinkering with the tax code. We apparently just cut the childhood poverty rate in half in the covid bill. --
"some businesses will suffer, the one's paying slave wages, but the over all good will greatly outweigh it, e.g. forcing all those corporations who exploit the poor to pay a living wage. That's what you don't get; most employers aren't "those corporations". There aren't a lot of "those corporations" in small town America. How many do you see in this photo?
