Satisfying your own vision
or
Learning

People make all sorts of assumptions, you are making assumptions.
Learning is always about having a teacher and a student, that is simply the way learning works.
The act of accepting teachers is the cultivation of knowledge.
It is about being actively involved in a field of knowledge through training, instruction and practice.
Even those who are home schooled have to listen to their parents if they are to learn.

Wisdom and intelligence are different faculties, knowledge does not confer wisdom.
There are a lot of subjects that can be skipped completely without creating any deficit.
There is no need at all to understand Pittman Shorthand or typesetting.
You may find value in such studies but I do not.
They do not appear to be nonsense, they are in fact, nonsense.
When I spend time in a classroom today. it is time spent on learning knowledge I want to cultivate.
I have no interest at all in listening to someone instruct me in flower arrangements or how to apply blush.
And obtaining that knowledge would make me no wiser, in spite of your contention to the contrary.

cultivated my knowledge where it matters to me.

This is a lot like home schooling, except you don't even have the parental influence to guide you. There is a reason that colleges have multiple teachers, each proficient in different areas and some proficient in what appears to be nonsense. The act of sorting through the diversity of views to find something coherent to your own life experience makes a person wiser than they can ever learn on their own.
