freus and thread, _______ Microsoft will not buy telco stake-Gates PARIS, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp MSFT.O chairman Bill Gates on Tuesday said the U.S. software group had no plans to buy a stake in a telecommunications company but did want to work as partners with telcos. "There has never been any discussion about us (buying) any part of a phone company, British Telecom BT.L or any other phone company," Gates told a news conference after meeting French Finance Minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn. "However, the co-operation between ourselves and the phone companies is a very important thing. If you believe in the Internet, you need lots of high-speed connections and that requires investment by the phone companies," he said. "For the phone companies, there is an opportunity here to provide new services, including hosting the Internet, including running electronic mail systems or electronic commerce clearing houses," he added. "We have a very good relationship with France Telecom FTE.PA, we are doing quite a few things with them, as we do with phone companies around the world, Gates said. "At this stage, I do not see, and we certainly aren't discussing, any type of investment. We are in the software business, that's the business we know. It is a very different business from the communications business. "And like we do with chips manufacturers, personal computer manufacturers or consultants, we are going the partnership model to create global solutions for the customer," he said. British Telecommunications Plc shares were boosted in January by various bid rumours including one that said Microsoft would want to buy the telecommunications group. Finland's equipment maker Nokia Ab, Oy NOKSa.HE, where Gates will make a visit on Thursday, also saw its shares jump in June last year on suggestions Microsoft might buy a stake. In France, Microsoft merged its MSN online business with France Telecom's Wanadoo and the two companies work on promoting ISDN high capacity data lines for Microsoft Exchange products. Strauss-Kahn and Gates discussed closer co-operation of Microsoft researchers with national science laboratories, with Gates saying the U.S. company could help get products to market more quickly. Gates said Microsoft had no plans to add any European research sites to its Cambridge, Britain, site for the next few years. REUTERS Rtr 19:57 02-03-98 _____ So....no telco toy for Billy. Ibexx
