Leveraged investors and the spike in volatility may have also played their parts in the tumult.

I can definitely see leveraging greed. In 2008 deregulated banks that were insured by the government practically begged speculators on Wall St to risk money because if they lost taxpayers paid but if they won they won big. I don't think much has changed in terms of regulations since then.

Not that Bitcoin will cause a giant crash... but it seems possible.
