No doubt!

I've owned Amat several times.

They achieved their scale after buying Varian.

Much like Lam when they bought Novellus or KLAC when they bought Tencor.

All of those companies had the presence of mind not to out compete(on price), but to join forces and gain scale with their parts and service business becoming a sustaining business in tough times.

When new systems get ordered they had manufacturing facilities to address the cycles and add to their existing installed owner base.

Back in 1999 there were 2-3 companies for each niche. The strongest prevailed and then in turn gained the installed owner base to service.

It has been a maturing of the sector and the relentless proliferation of the many chip types.

Why they even pay a dividend now - I really all but require that.
