In a nutshell, space on one side of a magnetic "wave" or field line has positive magnetic polarity. On the other side is negative. It emanates from the galactic core and spirals outward. There is a series of these boundaries between positive and negative. As we go through the gradient from, currently, more negative to more positive, all hell begins to break loose...until all of it has been loosed. There are dozens of S0 presentations on the matter.
