The ‘twirly thing’ you cited takes water from high spot, twirls it, as it descends to a low spot, losing potential energy in exchange for kinetic energy, to generate power and do useful work, and is a variation of a dam / turbine setup

The ‘twirly thing’ Message 31941129 commented on by the Jack took slow moving water on one level, side-tracks the water into a twirl, and elevates the water to a high spot, to do other useful work

I wonder how many times the two twirls can be concatenated to do useful work up and down. Am guessing it depends on the speed of the original water source and dimension of the river.
