There's a new book out on the 2nd Amendment and I don't have to time to find its name but it basically argues white men needed guns to control the hundreds of slaves they owned so the 2nd was necessary to ratify the Constitution. One of the largest slave trades in the US was done by Catholic monks and it's hard to image a few monks keeping over 700 men, women and children in line without guns. Makes sense to me, but I haven't read the book yet.
