My point was simply that cats need the same freedom dogs need to be really happy; and to point out how happy they are when they get it.

I don't see cats as killing machines, I see them as a very successful animal. They fill a niche in the ecology e.g. keeping rodents in check.

Some feel killing all the black cats in the middle ages may have exacerbated the black plague?

And as cities only cover 1% of the land, and so many people like having cats and want to let them run free, and that they do keep rodent populations in check, sacrificing some "little city birds" (ducks, pigeons and geese seem to have no problem) is a trade off I am ok with for the mental health of the cats and cat owners who don't want to deprive them of their "self actualization"..

It seems to me the other 99% of the land is enough for the birds.

But I also realize this is a subjective issue and respect the other points of view.

And it really doesn't matter that much, but all my life, I have seen people be very insensitive to animals and cause great mental health problems for animals out of ignorance e.g. zoos that cage animals and cause them to pace, or dogs never allowed to run free, or cats who are never let outdoors :)>.

When I was younger I had dogs. I don't recall any of them ever bringing home live or dead small animals.

Like humans, the cats are killing machines.
