From the abstract:
"Un-owned cats, as opposed to owned pets, cause the majority of this mortality."

Wisconsin alone estimates that there are over 1 million feral cats in their state.

We decided to keep ours in after we could no longer stand the deaths outside. Turns out, our cat is much happier inside. She literally runs from the door when it is opened (we thought she'd run to it.) Even if she were sad we would still keep her in, just because we could not stand seeing any more dead birds or lizards. But it's turned out to be a win win for us.
