Has anybody heard any news on deposition techniques for copper? The IBM announcement this morning might give a market boost to some shares -- I'm remembering the "Semitool stampede" after the initial announcement of successful copper connectivity.

Asian markets generally down today. I'm keeping some cash and/or short interest for the time being. If Cymer holds up at 18 1/2, it might be a good candidate, especially considering the continuing problems with DUV. I noticed that IBM made the 1000mhz prototype with .25um equipment, which while it doesn't mean a WHOLE lot as far as commercial production of faster chips, might mean we'll be seeing a couple more Micrascan III's. Several commentators have noted that i-line is still being ordered and practical acceptance of DUV remains slower than expected.

Cymer states that it has a new generation of 248nm machines coming into production with increased pulse rate, higher energy, better pulse-to-pulse stability, etc. I haven't heard anything on the optics/glass side recently, but you'd have to think they're working to get the problems ironed out. Nikon's new scanner has a field of something like 22mm square -- not too impressive.

So, the DUV revolution may happen more gradually than a lot of people think, i.e. the DUV evolution. I'd look for near-term productivity growth in other areas than litho right now, I think. The market seems to be recognizing this with the recent boom in TER and COHU share price.
