I for one feel good that INTC Mgt. had the foresight to gain some degree of control over perhaps the only viable competitor to Merced. With Compaq's attempt to supplant INTC w/ AMD on the low end, they perhaps could have leveraged Alpha against INTC on the high end.

Or DEC could have been acquired by another large company who might have tried to build upon Alpha's technology strengths with the necessary marketing. However, INTC made it all a mute point when they did their deal with DEC.
