I spoke to Investors Relations at ORBI this morning about the company's status re y2k. The lady said the company has been aware of the problem for a long time, that they were sensitive to it and were on top of it. Apparently the relative newness of the company makes the problem a lot easier to resolve. At least she was familiar with the problem - many IR people are not. However, she did not know what I was talking about when I mentioned possible date-sensitive embedded systems in ORBI products. I tried to reach Elaine Mohar, the ORBI person responsible for MIS and, therefore, y2k to get specific answers regarding the company's y2k status. I was unable to reach her since she is constantly on the move. If anyone reaches her for whatever reason, please ask her. As many of you know, the problem is world-wide with Europe and especially Asia way behind in addressing it. Some economists here are predicting a recession or worse because of it and one can only speculate on the fallout from Asia if the problem remains unresolved there. The bottom line of many companies will be impacted negatively because of it starting probably this quarter. The US government is giving increasing attention to the matter since computers at the IRS, Soc. Sec., Dept of Defense, FAA, and countless other departments are involved. Today, the president finally addressed the problem. Below is a post about it from CKHouston from the y2k board: "BREAKING NEWS: President Clinton to Sign Executive Order Appointing Y2K Czar and Creating President's Council on the Year 2000 Problem "Our sources tell us that tomorrow President Clinton will announce the formation of a President's Council on Y2K headed by John Koskinen out of the Office of Management & Budget. Check back regularly at Westergaard Year 2000 for the latest developments.y2ktimebomb.com Back in November '97, Tony Keyes called for the appointment of a Y2K Czar in his House Testimony. Looks like they're FINALLY doing it!" There are many sites and stock boards relating to the y2k problem for those of you unfamiliar with it. Below are a few sites. I've deleted many others from my machine since they have been cluttering up my bookmarks.gartner4.gartnerweb.com year2000.com 207.183.153.206 207.183.153.206 year2000.com The TPRO thread is one of the best IMO in reference to embedded systems though it has more than its share of silly posts. They also have a TPRO Research Board which is much better, but I have lost the URL.207.183.153.206 Regards JimG
