Interesting, that two intelligent people can look at the same charts, and come to opposite conclusions. I am judging sector performance based on where they are now, compared to their pre-pandemic highs. Energy XLE is one of the few sectors still well below the 2018 highs. Consumer discretionary XLY is far above where it was pre-pandemic.

When I look for patterns, I discard outliers. 2020 is an outlier, the whole year and everything that happened. What it did to stocks is not a repeatable event, because global pandemics happen only once a century. We are still recovering from 2020.
