<40 years seems like a bit of a stretch>

With current technology, EVs are good for short trips around town, and then you have to charge them overnight. Most of my driving is like that. But, once a year, I go on a long road trip. An EV just will not do that. Even if someone funds hi-voltage charging stations everywhere (very expensive), it will still take a lot longer than gassing up.

Your car is likely your second-most expensive purchase, so the switching cost is very high.

Then there is long-haul trucking, aviation, plastics.

Green TrueBelievers want a oil-less future, and it will happen, but not tomorrow. Just like Evangelicals want the Second Coming, and feminists want men to get in touch with their feelings, do yoga, and stop hitting things. We all yearn for a Utopia.
