That's all bullshit. Only a full blown retard didn't know what those remarks meant. There were fine people on both sides and there were scoundrels. Some of those people were simply protesting the loss of their history and heritage. In the same way that ISIS was tearing down statues in conquered areas, so too, has the left been tearing them down here. Marxists always do that.. It is well recorded in historical accounts.
