I'm not sure about the exact mechanics (I assume that you can just go through your broker, but maybe it's with LGND directly), but you end up paying Ligand 7 1/8 for each LGNDW exercised and you get back an equal number of LGND. Thus 1000 LGNDW would require a payment of about $7125 which would then get you 1000 LGND and Ligand would get the money (and the number of outstanding shares would increase by 1000).
