3Com Wins Gigabit Ethernet Tester's Choice Award from Data
Communications
10:32 a.m. Feb 04, 1998 Eastern

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 4, 1998--

SuperStack(R) II Switch 9300 Turns In "Letter-Perfect Results in

Layer 2 Core Switch Tests"

3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS), the market share leader in Ethernet
networking, today announced that its SuperStack(R) II Switch 9300, introduced last
month, has been chosen for a Tester's Choice award by Data Communications as a
top performer in its February Lab Test on Gigabit Ethernet switches. This
acknowledgment follows Data Communications 1997 internetworking Hot Product
award for 3Com's CoreBuilder(TM) 3500 Layer 3 high-function switch.

In Layer 2 core switch tests comparing 3Com's SuperStack II Switch 9300 against
Bay Networks' Accelar 1200 switch, Extreme Networks' Summit1 and Prominet
Corporation's P550 Cajun Switch, the SuperStack II Switch 9300 "breezed through
the performance tests with wire-speed forwarding under the heaviest possible
loads." According to Data Communications, the SuperStack II Switch 9300 "moved
traffic on 12 ports at wire speed -- nearly 18 million frames per second -- with zero
frame loss." The test can be viewed at
data.com.

"We are very excited that our new SuperStack II Switch 9300 has been
acknowledged by Data Communications in tests, showing its outstanding
performance and benefits for companies looking to deploy Gigabit Ethernet," said
Robert Gohn, product line director at 3Com. "3Com is dedicated to providing
flexible migration to 10/100 and Gigabit Ethernet networking with systems currently
priced at less than half the cost of competing solutions." About the SuperStack II
Switch 9300

The new SuperStack II Switch 9300 is 12-port Gigabit Ethernet switch offering
absolute wire-speed performance (17.8M packets per second(a)) at pricing more
typical of fiber Fast Ethernet switches. Priced at just $1,249 per port (U.S. list
price), less than half the cost of competitor solutions, it enables affordable Gigabit
Ethernet deployment in workgroup aggregation and data center applications.

The SuperStack II Switch 9300 is part of 3Com's new 10/100/1000 solutions,
which combine industry-leading performance and low cost with feature-rich,
intelligent software that delivers the industry's first stackable system offering
end-to-end global policy, network control and pervasive management. About 3Com
