One economist, Neil Saker of SocGen Crosby in Singapore,
calculates that an Indonesian currency board could support
the rupiah at 5,500 rupiah to the dollar, but only if it were
allowed to supplement its own $20 billion in reserves with the
$43 billion total of the IMF rescue package and other pledged
funds.

Indonesia sees continued export growth

JAKARTA, Feb 4 (Reuters) - Indonesia would continue to boost exports, Industry and Trade
Minister Tunky Ariwibowo said on Wednesday after releasing figures showing a trade surplus of
$1.42 billion in November 1997.

''The depreciation of our currency has had a positive impact on our exports. Our competitiveness
has increased,'' Ariwibowo told reporters after a cabinet meeting chaired by President Suharto.

''We will continue to boost exports. We will encourage the use of domestic products locally to
cut imports,'' he said.

He said Indonesia posted a trade surplus of $1,424.1 million in November, compared with
$1,098.2 million in October.

He said total exports in November were $4.66 billion, compared with $4.56 billion in October.
Imports dropped to $3.24 billion from $3.46 billion. Oil and gas exports fell to $949.7 million
from $993.5 million in October.
