The U.S. Constitution laid it out... "To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries;" When you take and use IP without following "the rules" intended to reward innovators... to encourage them to share... innovators quit innovating... or, at least, quit sharing. I know how and why that's true... as I'm one of them... so I'm not speaking about theory, or in hypothetical terms... I have a huge backlog of work already done... that I will never publish... The only obligation I have to publish work I've done... is to get paid for it... ? And, if that's not happening... neither is the publishing ??? That's no different than is true for others... who expect to get paid for the work they do... and, if they don't get paid... they don't go to work ? That is the solution: "don't be a slave" and "don't work for thieves for free". So, either you have to have a system of rules which others who have agreed to abide by... WILL and DO abide by... to pay you for the work you've done... or else you terminate the progress of science and all the sharing of learning about useful arts. I see consequences daily... work already done 25 years ago... is still not accessible to "state of the art" innovators publishing today... showing they don't know what others had already learned decades back ? Massively wasteful... to duplicate the effort over decades... and still not get there ? That's why I note the impact of IP theft and deliberately designed "leaky" tech enabling it... as imposing a new digital dark ages. Innovation is slowing... not accelerating... ? So, what you end up with is the most expensive and least functional "innovation"... able to be delivered by bureaucrats... when they know they're being spied on... That doesn't mean innovation stops... it just becomes massively inefficient... as a part of "don't work for thieves for free" requires not publishing... not patenting... but keeping your innovations SECRET... not writing them down.... not sharing... not putting them in a computer... not telling or paying lawyers... not telling people how you know how to do things others can't... not taking the risks IF you's allow a functional product to make it to market... So, mostly... you don't... The only work I share, now... is the work I WANT to share... knowing it is a contribution... charity... a public service... even though others will still steal the credit ? We live in an age dominated and defined by dishonorable men... China is a huge part of the problem... as a deliberate part of undermining "rules based order"... The rules based order is what it is for a reason ? Free markets... work better than other systems... particularly in things like innovation... not in the "incremental" modifications of existing tech... but in new ideas. There aren't many new ideas these days... just a lot of drones hacking on old ideas... incrementally. But, obviously, not just China. The U.S. started the crazy BS about ensuring all the computer chips are made "pre-hacked"... I predicted the impact... which we see today... as corrosive not just of freedoms, but of basic market function, killing innovation... and so it has. The "surveillance society" being delivered in result... sucks... and is not sustainable... but "brittle". Europe has made things vastly worse... the U.S. cooperating too, by going along with the totally wrong European scheme of "first to file" being deemed "the inventor"... So, if someone in China or Germany hacks your innovations and beats you to the patent office... they deem him "the inventor" even though he's only a thief ? They've broken the patent system... including by favoring and rewarding theft over innovation... as if the system wasn't already a major disaster BEFORE that... as totally failing in differentiating "new" from "obvious"... spawning a massive litigation industry... raising the cost of everything... because patents are rendered meaningless judgments until tested in the courts ? Its a plan designed to waste your life... to prevent innovation... to ensure others profit from the obstruction. Since they broke it... and normalized theft... DON'T USE IT... and don't facilitate theft ? We've gotten 6 months worth of innovation in the last two decades.... because of it. Will only get worse. I'm hardly the only one "not participating" because of it... ? Note, though, that the "same" system works WAY BETTER for authors... who aren't being similarly hobbled in filing lawsuits to defend creative work against people who conspire to steal their creative works ? Theft still happens... but, if you can show valid proof of the ownership of a creative work... the fact of documented authorship still matters ? So, write a book... even one that's corrosive of good order and social good... and win many rewards... But, don't solve problems that matter and make the world a better place... as they won't respect you... Will the problem prove self correcting ? Maybe in the sense that the dark ages were self correcting ?
