FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DECEMBER PC SALES TO WORKPLACE

UP 15%, CI DATA SHOWS

Compaq Retains Top Position

LA JOLLA, Calif., Jan. 26, 1998 -- Sales of PCs to the workplace grew 15% last December over the same month the previous year, according to new data from Computer Intelligence (CI), the market-research industry's leading provider of sales and marketing solutions. Compaq continued its lead as the No. 1 supplier to the workplace, while Dell, IBM, Gateway 2000 and Hewlett Packard also gained share, based on the initial release of CI's 97Q4 market-share data.

CI's monthly PC Purchase Index survey of more than 5,000 businesses was at 1.15 for December, continuing the strong trend of the fourth quarter. On average, 1997's fourth quarter showed 16% growth over 1996's fourth quarter. While December's Index was slightly down from November's, it is not a likely sign of a coming decline in the workplace PC market. CI's analysis of planned purchases through 1998 shows that market growth should continue.

"PC sales to the U.S. workplace continued on a strong positive trend from the lull during the late second quarter and early third quarter," said Aaron C. Goldberg, Executive Vice President of Computer Intelligence. "Large companies have been on a yearlong buying spree that has continued through the fourth quarter. Purchases by small businesses have rebounded from a downturn in June through September. The medium-size business segment is the only one where there is some concern, although even here, we seem to have bounced off the low point we saw in September and October."

"Consolidation of the market is also clear in our latest data," said Dave Tremblay, CI Senior Industry Analyst for the PC market. "The Top Five Vendors have taken almost 4 share points from the rest of the market this year. Their success is most pronounced in the large firms, where the Top Five have gained more than 7 points of share in 1997. Most of the share gained by the Top-Five brands has come out of the hides of the next seven brands. Our figures show that the share captured by 'no-name clones' has remained nearly unchanged."
