<<Cisco said that for the first time its remote-access sales surpassed those of market leader Ascend Communications Inc.>>

Coming after John Chamber's prediction of Cisco being number 1 in remote access, I see this as a ploy by Cisco to give customers impression that they are now big fish in remote access. No doubt Cisco is targeting this market, but none of the market analyst collaborate on the data.

My guess is that Cisco's definition of remote access is different than everyone else. If they lump everything from remote concentrators, remote servers, routers that can do remote access, and switches that can do remote access in the carriers, enterprises, and SOHO market, then they might have the number that surpass what Ascend reported in their earning earlier.

But Ascend's remote access number is based pretty much entirely on carrier/ISP class device. If we use Ascen's definition which is acceptable industry-wide, all the analysts agreed that 3Com has the overall leadership, Ascend is second, and Cisco is a distant third.
