PNY to Offer Direct Rambus System Memory Modules
PARSIPPANY, N.J., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- PNY Technologies, Inc., a global leader in design, manufacture and distribution of memory solution for personal computers, printers, portable computers, workstations, and digital cameras, jointly announces with Rambus Inc. [Nasdaq:RMBS - news] that PNY will manufacture and distribute memory modules that support the Direct Rambus DRAMs. These modules, also known as RIMMs, will play a major role in the PC main memory business starting in 1999.

''PNY continues to invest in the equipment and training required to support next generation memory architectures such as Rambus,'' said Robert Wavra, Product Engineering Manager, of PNY. ''With three state-of-the-art facilities, we have the capability to expand our functional, applications, and environmental testing. These factors are key to the development of high-speed memory systems,'' explains Wavra.

The new technology will enable the DRAM industry's highest level of performance to date -- l.5 gigabytes per second (Gbytes/sec) of sustained bandwidth from a single device. In addition, the technology will span multiple generations of DRAM devices -- from 32-megabit to 1-gigabit densities. As a result, Direct Rambus technology gives original equipment manufacturers a stable memory interface for the next five years.

''For the past 10 years, processor performance has doubled every 18 months, but memory performance has not kept pace. In effect, memory has become the principal bottleneck to system performance,'' said Geoff Tate, president and CEO of Rambus Inc. ''The goal of the Direct Rambus program is to break the memory bottleneck by delivering breakthrough performance at affordable costs for a wide range of applications. With the help of Intel and our other partners, we believe we are well on our way to meeting this goal.''

PNY RIMMs will be, 100% compatible with the Rambus RIMM specification. Samples of Direct Rambus DRAMs are expected to be available in 1998, with volume production in 1999, Direct RDRAMs currently ship in volume in video game systems, add-in PC graphics cards, graphics workstations and consumer PCs from Gateway 2000 and Micron Electronics. The Rambus interface can be supported with 32MB, 64MB, 246MB, and 1GB DRAM densities, PNY also produces a full line of concurrent Rambus modules.

Last year Intel selected Direct Rambus as its DRAM interface architecture of the future, signaling that PC main memory is likely to have a Rambus interface. According to In-Stat DRAM Market Quarterly Forecast Update, the RDRAM share of the DRAM market, is expected to be about 30 percent by the year 2000 and close to 50 percent by 2001.

PNY Technologies, Inc. is a privately held company with advanced manufacturing and test facilities in Parsippany, New Jersey; Santa Clara, California and Bordeaux, France. Every PNY branded memory module is tested before shipment and comes with a lifetime warranty.
