M2 PRESSWIRE-4 February 1998-TEXAS INSTRUMENTS: Texas Instruments announces TIRIS Tag-it -- The new dimension of smart label technology (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

-- Breakthrough radio frequency identification technology for passenger-to-baggage verification and electronic boarding passes

For the airline industry, getting passengers to their destinations on time and with their accompanying luggage is a feat that requires identifying and tracking millions of items daily. With TIRIS Tag-it, the industry's first consumable electronic radio frequency identification (RFID) system, the airlines now have a highly reliable, economical baggage identification and tracking solution designed for positive passenger-to-baggage matching.

Developed by Texas Instruments (TI), the new Tag-it "smart labels" are paper-thin, flexible, printable and capable of being read simultaneously by reader units installed within baggage conveyors or by hand held units. The Tag-it system can be integrated with existing baggage tags and used in the form of ATBs or tickets for faster and easier processing of passengers through airport check-in and baggage claim areas.

Positive Passenger Baggage Matching (PPBM) - An Industry Mandate As the airline industry implements an international Positive Passenger Baggage Matching (PPBM) system, Tag-it "smart labels" provide reliable unique identification that automatically matches passengers to their bags during flight boarding for faster and more accurate baggage handling. Other benefits include eliminating the expense of having to reload an aircraft because an item is on the wrong plane, or compensating passengers for misrouted luggage. A positive passenger-to-baggage match also ensures a higher level of overall airport and airline security.

Tag-it RFID Technology

The new TIRIS Tag-it transponders feature read/write capabilities so stored information can be updated 'on-the-fly' and powerful simultaneous identification (SID) so that multiple tagged items may be accurately identified all at the same time as they pass a reading location. With Tag-it, parcels or bags overlapped on a conveyor do not have to be physically separated and read individually.

TIRIS Tag-it technology has several additional advantages for baggage handling and electronic ticketing applications, including the ability to:

-- fit seamlessly into existing departure control (DCS) baggage reconciliation systems (BRS), and co-reside with bar code printing and scanning systems;

-- provide extended data storage capability without increasing the size of the label;

-- carry within the tag key elements of the baggage source message (BSM), so that there is no need to reference a database to handle and route baggage;

-- be delivered through existing bag tag printer suppliers without occupying additional space at the check-in desk;

-- and be delivered at a volume price which makes RF bag tags cost-effective as a consumable label.

TI: An Experienced RFID Supplier

Since beginning 'proof of concept' trials with a. major international airline in 1990, Texas Instruments has been advancing THUS RFID technology as a robust identification and tracking solution for the harsh baggage handling environment.

As an IATA Registered Supplier and a member of the IATA Radio Frequency Interest Group (RFIG), the company has been working with the airlines and suppliers to develop industry-wide standards for RFID bag tags.

TIRIS - The RFID Standard

Texas Instruments, the first multi-national semiconductor company to develop and market RED systems, is currently the leading supplier of a comprehensive range of field-proven RFID products used in broad variety of applications, including automotive anti-theft systems, sports timing and automated payment programs at gas stations across the country. More than 30 million THUS tags are in use worldwide.

In basic terms, RFID involves wireless communication between a transponder and reader unit. Signals from the reader unit instruct the transponder to transmit back stored data, which is then used to activate a system, authorise a transaction, or retrieve an asset profile.
