I doubt the US will lock down until we get a couple more variants down the road from the Delta, say around Dec-Jan, and vaccines that are ill-suited to treat a spreading variant. Each variant makes the current vaccines less effective. The Novavax vaccine is the only one that is almost entirely effective against the Delta right now. Pfizer and Moderna are developing boosters to treat the variants, but they're always going to be behind. It's a race against viruses that use people to rapidly change to avoid being killed off. Viruses predate humans, and they play the long game.
