Bonefish,
He trusts government to redistribute wealth. It started when the government sent him a check so he could complete his grand canyon camping trip.
I don't get it. Birdie loves to brag about all the money he made as an individual before he fled the socialist utopia of New York.

Why would he need the government to pay for him to complete a camping trip to the Grand Canyon?

I wish. But I haven't been to the Grand Canyon in 45 years. I went twice during the summers when I was in college. I hiked from the South Rim to the North Rim. I spent a couple weeks camping out in the Canyon with my sleeping bag in year 1 and with a tent in year 2. That place literally saved my life. The strain that I placed on my body by hiking caused me to urinate with a drip of blood for two successive mornings. I flew back home and checked into a hospital and they discovered I had cancer of the bladder. It was a microscopic cyst, so small that they were able to remove it without cutting me up. I was out the next day making love to my girlfriend, who ended up becoming my wife.

The cancer never came back, even though the Doctors warned me that it most likely would. I didn't worry for a moment outside the day I was getting tested again for cancer.

As for trusting gov't, I have no choice since I find homelessness and severe income inequality to be unacceptable. But I am not naive. I know what people and governments are capable of.
