I learned to dive in Califorinia, back in 1973... full wet suits in 55 degree water, and the pounding of surf on the shore making a day with "good" visibility one where you could see for 8 to 10 feet... and those were rare.

Later, in the western Pacific... diving off a local fishing boat I'd hired, in a remote set of islands... reluctant to plunge in because it looked like doing so would immediately impale you on the coral. But, once in the water, the reef that looked to be just below the surface turned out to be 60 feet down... with visibility over 300 feet... even allowing you to see the sharks coming, before they arrived, if you were looking the right way...

The Red Sea was pretty amazing... hope it still is...

Haven't been diving in the PI... or Australia... or from there up into the Indian Ocean and across to Africa... which might be among the few places still most worth a visit... where remote enough islands and reefs have the ability to avoid the worst impacts of nearby population centers...

Looking for the right boat... still not in that much of a hurry...
