Randy Newman is as politically aware as any person in this country. The difference between you and him is he is intellectually honest. He was no fan of Maddox. But he did that Cavett was wrong in his mishandling of the situation “before Maddox had a chance to make an idiot of himself”.

But if you want to get balled up about the intro you do end up missing the essence, which was that the “northern n* is a negro. So, northerners are using that word, but they are saying the same things. But up north the n* is free. Then he lays out a list of places where the northerners pack negroes away for safe keeping.

And you’re still doing it today, fifty years after that song was written. You’re here calling me a racist, while you live in places that have wrecked more black lives than the south ever did.

It is really pathetically hypocritical if you give it a little thought.

This song is a portrait of racial politics in the US over last fifty years and you guys don’t even know it is happening. You have no idea you’re as much a target as I am. There is no real perfection available here.
