Russia was burned badly in Afghanistan if you may remember and gave rise to a new movement the al-Qaeda if you recall. Russia can ill afford another front as they are nailed down in Donetsk and Lugansk and also in Syria. Those that never where there cannot evaluate the difficulties to sort out the bad guys from the good guys.
